Gathering Cellular Information (IMEI, ICCID & Phone Number) on a Surface Tablet
This article walks through how to locate the IMEI, SIM ICCID, and cellular phone number on a Microsoft Surface tablet equipped with cellular (LTE/5G) connectivity. These identifiers are commonly requested by a wireless carrier when activating a SIM, troubleshooting a data connection, replacing a SIM card, or reporting a lost or stolen device.
Before You Begin
- Confirm the Surface model has built-in cellular/LTE hardware (for example, Surface Pro with LTE Advanced, Surface Pro X, or Surface Go LTE). Wi-Fi-only models will not show a Cellular option.
- The tablet should be powered on and signed in.
- If the device uses a physical SIM, confirm it is inserted in the SIM tray.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Select the Start button, then select Settings (or press Windows key + I).
- In Settings, select Network & Internet.
- Select Cellular from the list of connection types.
- If the tablet supports both a physical SIM and an eSIM, use the dropdown at the top of the Cellular page to choose which one you want to view (for example, SIM 1 or eSIM). Select the SIM associated with the line you are troubleshooting or activating.
- Select Mobile Operator Settings
- Scroll down to the Properties section. This section lists the device and SIM details, including:
- IMEI – the unique identifier for the tablet's cellular modem
- SIM – the unique identifier printed on/encoded in the SIM card
- Phone number – listed here only if the carrier provisions it automatically (see note below)
- Record the values you need. Each field can be selected and copied directly from this screen.
Note: Not every carrier pushes a phone number to this screen automatically. If the Phone number field is blank, check the carrier's account portal, the SIM's original packaging, or contact the carrier's support line with the ICCID to look up the number.
Note: On devices with both a physical SIM and an eSIM (such as Surface Pro X), the IMEI shown may be tied to the shared modem hardware rather than to each individual SIM profile, so the same IMEI can appear for both SIM 1 and eSIM. This is expected behavior, not an error.
If You Can't Access Windows Settings
- If the tablet won't power on or you can't reach the Settings app, check for a printed label on the SIM card itself (ICCID is printed on physical SIM cards) or in the original SIM packaging.
